History

First opened in 1881 during the reign of Queen Victoria as an elegant seaside lodging house, the property has long held its place within the story of Penzance’s waterfront. Renamed the Marine Hotel in 1905, it evolved gracefully with the changing century while preserving the character of its original Victorian architecture — its distinguished roofline, ornate gables, and commanding bay windows still overlooking the sea today. In 1999, Lesley first acquired the restaurant lease before taking stewardship of the entire hotel, ushering in a new chapter of refined hospitality. Now home to eighteen beautifully appointed rooms set across three floors, the hotel remains one of Penzance’s most iconic waterfront lodgings, timeless in both spirit and setting.

Local Area

Explore

Beyond the hotel, Cornwall unfolds in all its cinematic beauty. A short stroll along the promenade leads to the celebrated Jubilee Pool, the much-loved Art Deco lido perched beside the sea, while the sweeping shores of Mounts Bay offer unforgettable views towards St Michael’s Mount, often accompanied by sightings of seals along the coastline. Further afield, guests can discover the dramatic clifftop setting of the Minack Theatre, explore the world-renowned Eden Project, or wander through the charming fishing villages of Mousehole and Newlyn, where narrow lanes, working harbours, and independent galleries capture the timeless spirit of Cornwall. No visit would be complete without a journey to Land’s End, where the Atlantic stretches endlessly beyond the rugged granite cliffs.

For guests wishing to experience Cornwall more deeply, we are delighted to recommend a selection of trusted local partners. Kernow Tours offers beautifully guided journeys across Cornwall’s hidden corners and historic landscapes, Venture Outdoors Cornwall curates unforgettable coastal adventures and outdoor experiences, while Proper Cornwall provides an insider’s guide to the region’s finest food, culture, and local treasures.

Food & drinks

Dining at The Lugger

At the heart of the hotel sits The Lugger Restaurant — a celebrated coastal dining destination overlooking the sea in Penzance. With its relaxed elegance, panoramic terrace views, and warm Cornish hospitality, the restaurant offers a dining experience shaped by the rhythm of the coastline and the quality of local produce.

Our menus are thoughtfully crafted using ingredients sourced from some of Cornwall’s finest independent suppliers, including fresh seafood landed daily at nearby Newlyn fishing port, locally reared meats from trusted butchers, and seasonal vegetables grown within the region. The result is a menu that feels both refined and deeply connected to Cornwall’s landscape and waters.

The fully licensed bar offers a carefully chosen selection of ales, wines, premium spirits, and speciality coffees, alongside beloved local favourites such as Tarquin’s Cornish Gin. During warmer months, guests can dine or enjoy drinks upon the sea-view terrace, where sweeping coastal views create an unforgettable setting from morning through sunset.

The restaurant warmly welcomes vegetarian and vegan diners and is happy to accommodate specific allergies and dietary requirements when advised at the time of booking. Four-legged companions are equally welcome, making the restaurant a truly relaxed and inviting space for both guests and locals alike.
